If Your Boss Told You “Today is Your Last Day,” How Prepared are You for this News?

mocha momentsMany of us dream of leaving our jobs…wishing. Whenever we get ticked off about something at work we fantasize about handing our boss this letter (taken from the prologue in Chris Guillebeau’s book – The $100 Startup:

“Dear boss, I’m writing to let you know that your services are no longer required. Thanks for everything, but I’ll be doing things my own way now.”

These are very uncertain times. Nothing is “sure” anymore. Today you’re a senior manager at a firm – tomorrow a bigger better firm buys out the firm you’re working for – new leadership takes position – new vision takes the place of what was – after a review of staff “acquired” – “they” decide that YOUR SERVICES are no longer required.

Or you might be working for a company that’s continuing to lose money and can no longer manage loan repayments just so that they can keep the staff on payroll and without a moment’s notice – you’re on the breadline.

Now more than ever, you have to start thinking about how you’re going to survive if you no longer had a job and a salary.

This scenario is not ridiculous or unreal. There is a very real possibility that this is going to happen to more and more people or even you.

This is the trend but don’t just take my word for it. In his book Rebooting Work – Transform How You Work in the Age of Entrepreneurship author Maynard Webb says:

CEO of Your Own Destiny is the sweet spot that more people need to know about where they are not dependent on a corporation or hindered by their own frustrations. As this is where most workplaces are headed – there is no longer job security – this is the mind-set individuals need to adopt to be successful today and in the future.

In his book Choose Yourself, James Altucher says: “The world is changing. Markets have crashed. Jobs have disappeared. Industries have been disrupted and are being remade before our eyes. Everything we aspired to for “security,” everything we thought was “safe,” no longer is: College. Employment. Retirement. Government. It’s all crumbling down. In every part of society, the middlemen are being pushed out of the picture. No longer is someone coming to hire you, to invest in your company, to sign you, to pick you. It’s on you to make the most important decision in your life: Choose Yourself.  New tools and economic forces have emerged to make it possible for individuals to create art, make millions of dollars and change the world without “help.” More and more opportunities are rising out of the ashes of the broken system to generate real inward success (personal happiness and health) and outward success (fulfilling work and wealth).

And in the book The Art of Being Unmistakable – A Collection of Essays about Making a Dent in the Universe, author Srinivas Rao shares – “To create unmistakable work, you must take risks. You must cross lines, personal and professional. You must go to the point of a no return. On my 34th birthday, I asked myself a question. “If this had been the last year of my life, would I have been ok with how I’d lived?” When my answer was a resounding NO, I knew that something had to change.”
