In the classic book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill shares a Self-Confidence Formula. This is a formula that he asks readers to memorize and repeat aloud once a day and there is good reason for this.
The second paragraph of that formula goes as follows:
I realize that the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality; therefore, I will concentrate my thoughts for 30 minutes daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture of that person.
We usually set goals for ourselves without fully contemplating the new habits we need to form, those habits we need to discard and the new routines and rituals that we need to integrate into our lives daily that will fully support us achieving our goal.
Regardless of our skill level or what we’re potentially capable of, nothing happens unless behaviours change and this change happens over time but only if we are conscientious and do what is necessary to create those changes.
I often wondered why teachers had us memorize parts of Shakespeare, Psalms in the bible, poems etc. To this day I can still recite Psalm 100. It is a part of me that has never died. It has become second nature to me. And therein lies the lesson.
Hill is asking us to spend 30 minutes daily thinking about our goals and the person we need to become in order to achieve our goals. This is not about CHANGING who we are. Who we are will never change.
It is about eliminating those things that prevent us from being truly WHO WE ARE.
If we conscientiously choose our new habits and rituals to align with the goals we set for ourselves, and think about them daily, then eventually we will be influenced by our thoughts and those thoughts WILL EVENTUALLY affect our actions.
It’s happening already. Many times what we’re thinking is how lousy we are. We call ourselves lazy. We say we love to procrastinate.
This is what we move towards – what we see in our mind.
Today carefully contemplate what you’re seeing in your mind. And if you don’t like what you’re seeing, gradually change the thoughts and images so they begin to align with the results you’re after and the goals you wish to achieve.
